A kilometre stretch of Brookwater Drive linking Springfield City’s blue-chip residential suburb Brookwater to Springfield Central will officially open to traffic on Friday, February 26.
The $10 million project – which created 50 direct and 150 jobs over the past 12 months – signals the final construction stage of Brookwater Drive – and the first connection of the road to Springfield Central.
Springfield City Group (SCG) Chairman Maha Sinnathamby said the work – in partnership with R&F Property Australia – was delivered on-time and on-budget, despite restrictions imposed on the construction industry during the coronavirus pandemic.
“This new stretch of road has been completed at a time when the economy has been suffering severe uncertainty because of COVID-19,” he said.
“Construction work like that carried out on the extension of Brookwater Drive during 2020, was deemed to be an essential service by the Government.
“Workers though had to adhere to hygiene practices – like social distancing – to allow the project to proceed and for the workers to keep their jobs.”
Mr. Sinnathamby said the new stretch of road would provide residents of Brookwater direct access to the Springfield City Centre including the Springfield Central Train Station, the Brisbane Lions Training facility and the Orion shopping centre.
“To date, $18 billion has been invested into Springfield City, including some of the adjacent infrastructure,” he said.
“The opening of this new stretch of Brookwater Drive represents SCG’s – in conjunction with R&F Property Australia – ongoing investment in high quality infrastructure design and delivery, to support one of the fastest growing regions in Australia.’
General Manager for R&F Property Australia Mr. Lai Zhi said the new section of road represented the company’s “first on the ground investment” in the $6 billion Central Gardens project, a significant residential development located adjacent to the rail station and transit hub in the heart of Springfield City.
“The delivery of high-quality infrastructure is essential to creating a vibrant community,” Mr. Zhi said.
“R&F Property Australia intends to launch the Central Gardens residential apartment community to the market in the second quarter of this year (2021), and the opening of this road will ensure potential purchasers understand the inherent qualities of good access, amenity and proximity to the Brookwater Golf Course, train station and AFL stadium – that this development possesses.”
Springfield is the only master-planned city in Australia, other than Canberra, since Federation with its own Act of Parliament and has a population of 46,000, which is expected to triple over the next two decades.
