Greater Springfield and surrounding residents living with complex medical issues can now access specialised care at the newly opened Southside Specialist Medical and Geriatric Centre in Springfield Central.
Business partners, Dr Kah Wai Chan and consultant physician and geriatrician Dr Mujtaba Ahmed, opened the multi-speciality specialist centre just three weeks ago after realising a need to provide a high standard and comprehensive medical care for people with complex medical issues and others needing to manage diseases with multisystem involvement.
“We focus on disease prevention and work on strategies to reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases and related morbidities,” Dr Ahmed said.
The centre, which has a focus on general medicine and geriatrics, provides care for patients with various diseases and disorders including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, metabolic bone disease, stroke, endocrine disorders, and kidney disease.
Dr Ahmed said older people with diseases or disabilities were at the forefront of medical care at Southside Specialist Medical and Geriatric Centre.
He said they provided care to older patients with complex medical and psychological comorbities, and other issues including early onset dementia, medication reviews, Parkinson’s disease and continence assessment.
New Census data released on Tuesday revealed the state’s fastest-growing local government areas (LGAs), with Ipswich a standout performer, where an extra 29,105 people pushed the population by 12.7 per cent over five years.
Dr Ahmed said the locality of the Southside Specialist Medical and Geriatric Centre, in the Greater Springfield Specialist Suites, was a major drawcard to patients.
“Patients can catch the train or drive here easily,” he said.
“Some of our patients come as far as Beaudesert, instead of travelling to Brisbane’s CBD.
“Our medical centre is in a calm place within a city environment and you don’t have to struggle to find a carpark.”
Dr Chan runs his private outpatient clinics at multiple locations said they provided hospital-based care to patients.
“Right next to the Mater Hospital is the Aveo Retirement facility where some patients come from,” he said.
He is also a visiting medical officer at the Mater Private Hospital (South Brisbane) and a staff specialist at Logan Hospital.
Dr Chan’s specialises in cognitive assessments, management of different types of dementia, Parkinson’s disease, frailty, falls, osteoporosis/fractures and Comprehensive Geriatrics Assessments.
With the announcement of a new Mater Public Hospital at Springfield, Dr Ahmed said he would look at other specialists joining the centre, including a pain specialist, so patients had one place for multi-specialist medical care.
Dr Ahmed became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2014 specialising in Geriatric Medicine and Internal Medicine.
He started as Consultant Physician at Logan hospital and has private consultation rooms as part of Southside Specialist Medical and Geriatric Centre.
Dr Ahmed is involved with teaching medical students and he is also a supervisor for basic and advanced physician trainees.
Southside Specialist Medical and Geriatric Centre is located at the Greater Springfield Specialist Suites, Suite 404, Level 4/2 Wellness Way, Springfield Central.
